Abstract:Individuals who are part of sexual or gender minorities (SGM) experience health disparities. Based on the Minority Stress Theory (Meyer, 2003), this paper investigated the relationship between discrimination, identity nondisclosure, and mental distress, to close existing research gaps. In addition, it was also researched whether there is a moderation of generation (Millennials or Generation Z). Using an online survey, the potential relationships and moderation were investigated. In line with the Minority Stress Theory, discrimination was moderately positively associated with mental distress (ρ = 0.41, p = .00, df = 66). Identity nondisclosure did not show any statistical significance. Likewise, there was no significant moderation of generation. The only exception was found in an exploratory analysis, where gender minority Millennials experienced more identity nondisclosure (τ = 0.26, p = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.358). The findings of the current study highlight the need for future research and show the importance of preventing discrimination. The major limitations were the small sample size and the use of convenience sampling. Additionally, there was no control variable measuring other forms of social stress. Future research should examine other variables, like the broader concept of internalized stigma, and other generations than Millennials and Generation Z.
