Abstract:Not a lot of research has been performed on the relationship between sedentary behaviour (SB), rumination and perceived stress. Students spend significantly more time in SB than non-students and as a result are possibly at risk of experiencing more perceived stress than others, exacerbated by rumination. This study investigates whether there is an association between sedentary behaviour, perceived stress and the moderator variable rumination over time. This study used an experience sampling method design in a student sample. Trait rumination was measured at the start of the study and total sedentary time and state perceived stress were measured for the remaining 15 days. Linear mixed models were used for analysing the long-form data. No significant relationship was found between the variables sedentary behaviour, perceived stress, and the moderator rumination. A weak relationship was found between rumination and perceived stress. Thus, there does not seem to be a significant relationship between sedentary behaviour and perceived stress in students, regardless of trait rumination levels. This can be considered a positive finding for students, as they spend a lot of their time performing SB. The study adds onto previous literature and proposes future study recommendations.
