Abstract:The study aimed to explore the link between sedentary leisure time and mood in university students, considering the personality trait of openness to experience. Using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) over two weeks, 25 students (average age 21.68, 56% men) completed three daily surveys via the m-Path app to measure sedentary leisure time and state mood. Openness to experience was assessed at baseline. Analysis with linear mixed models revealed no significant effect of total sedentary leisure time on negative affect, but a significant association with lower positive affect. Openness to experience did not significantly moderate this relationship. The results suggest that while sedentary leisure time does not directly influence negative affect, it is linked to reduced positive affect, and this effect remains consistent regardless of individual differences in openness. Therefore, sedentary leisure time is not an effective strategy for enhancing mood among university students.
