Abstract:Preventing tooth caries in children is crucial due to its physical and mental risks. Current parental support strategies have inconsistent effectiveness. To tackle this, parental preferences and needs for interventions and knowledge about supporting their self-efficacy are necessary. This research aimed to discover whether parents with children from 0-5 prefer digital or non-digital interventions, and their self-efficacy in implementing them. An interview study was conducted with parents (N=7). They chose between a Voedingscentrum poster and the app “Glansje & Tom” and thematic analysis was done. Nine themes were obtained: “Easy to use with children”, “Educational tool”, “Physical intervention” and “Practical intervention” about the poster, “Stimulation to brush teeth” and “Imitate the ideas included in the app” about the app, “Game stimulating behavioural action” and “Not time-consuming intervention” as general needs, and, finally, “Gaining comfort by not needing to take care of child(ren)’s oral health alone” emphasised parents’ self-efficacy. This research showed that a playful and educative non-digital intervention would be beneficial within the parent-child routine to prevent tooth caries. Moreover, such interventions can increase parents’ self-efficacy in managing their children’s oral health. These insights are useful for intervention developers and future research could explore this with low-SES families.
