Abstract: | Background: Recent meta-analyses on Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) following violent bereavement show inconsistent findings regarding age as a risk factor. Buur et al. (2024) explored age's impact on other loss-related risk factors among naturally bereaved individuals. This study aims to investigate the direct association between age and PGD and examine how age affects the associations between gender, the relationship to the deceased, and PGD in violently bereaved individuals. Methods: Data from 47 individuals who experienced violent bereavement were collected. Multiple linear regression analyses assessed the direct associations of age, gender, and relationship to the deceased with PGD levels and the moderating effects of age on these associations. Results: Gender was significantly associated with higher PGD levels, while age was not. The relationship with the deceased (child or partner) was not significantly associated with PGD levels. Age did not moderate the associations between relationship to the deceased or gender and PGD levels. Conclusion: Age may not influence the relationship between gender, the relationship to the deceased, and PGD. Future research should explore contextual factors like economic status and health, potential non-linear relationships between age and PGD, and whether the closeness or quality of the relationship to the deceased contributes to PGD. |
