Abstract: | This study explores the perceptions of young adults regarding the relationship between mental health content on social media and their self-diagnosis and help-seeking behaviours. Utilizing a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven young adults aged 18-23 who actively engage with mental health content on social media and self-diagnosed before. The research aims to fill gaps in the existing literature by exploring the exposure to such content and individuals' mental health management and perceptions. Findings indicate that social media serves as a complementary information source rather than a substitute for professional help, highlighting its significant role in shaping users' mental health behaviours. However, the study also underscores the risks associated with misinformation and the potential negative emotional impacts of social media content. These insights call for improved regulation and education to ensure the accuracy and reliability of mental health information shared online. The study provides practical recommendations for social media platforms and mental health professionals to foster healthy engagement with mental health content, and emphasizes the need for responsible dissemination of information to support young adults' mental health positively. |
