Abstract: | In a country like the Republic of Moldova, where communality is valued, political disagreements among friends and family can negatively impact interpersonal relationships if not handled properly. This study utilised the communication accommodation theory (CAT), the relational turbulence theory (RTT), and the notions of dialogue, debate, and intimate distance to understand how Moldovans manage political disputes in close relationships. Initially, 22 Moldovans were interviewed to assess their political conversation dynamics and strategies for making these discussions more constructive. Subsequently, 5 of them participated in a focus group to share ideas and solutions for better political discussions. The findings of this research reveal the complexity of managing political disagreements within close relationships. Participants acknowledge that certain behaviours can negatively impact their relationships and cause suffering. However, many still employ non-constructive strategies that pause conflicts rather than resolve them. This study explores ways to reduce controversial differences through communicative actions and constructive solutions, emphasising the importance of family bonds and how individuals navigate political disagreements to maintain close relationships. Participants recognise the need for strategies to manage political discrepancies and are ready to adopt more constructive approaches to enhance the quality of their discussions. |
