Abstract:Greece is a country with a long history of work emigrants. However, today not only Greeks move to West-Europe to work, but also people from West-Europe to Greece. Among these people are also the Dutch. Working together with different cultural backgrounds can bring up problems in different areas. Therefore, the aim of this research is to get a better understanding of the cultural differences between the Netherlands and Greece, not by only capturing the attitudes and behaviors, but also the values and meaning behind these attitudes and behaviors. The research question for this thesis is therefore: “Which cultural differences are perceived by Dutch expatriates working in Greece?” To answer this research question, an inductive qualitative research approach was used, where sixteen interviews with Dutch expats in Greece was conducted. Resulting in fifteen Greek cultural standards with five underlying values: Philotimo, Kairos, Sinaisthimatikos, E kai ti na kanoume, and Androkrateia. The cultural standards together with the values gives a thick description of the Greek culture, from the Dutch point of view. This can be used to help understand and predict Greek behavior, which can help to prevent clashes on the work floor between the Dutch and Greeks.
