Abstract: | Wearables are increasingly popular for monitoring activity, sleep, and stress, but many users lack the knowledge to interpret their data, turning wearables into a source of stress. Wearables are especially interesting for non-professional athletes as they integrate wearables into their daily routines to monitor their activity and improve training. Because athletes have extensive knowledge about wearables, the adverse effects might be less common for them than for laypeople. Literature suggests psychoeducation can help users better understand wearable output and reduce stress. This study explored whether psychoeducation predicts lower subjective stress levels and how athleticism influences this relationship. A sample of 34 individuals with varying athleticism levels wore a stress-measuring wearable for 24 hours and completed a subsequent stress survey. Contrary to previous literature, no significant relationship was found between psychoeducation and subjective stress levels, nor was there a significant moderating effect of athleticism. These results suggest that psychoeducation may not effectively reduce stress and that athleticism does not act as a moderator. Future research should include more diverse samples and longer data collection periods to verify these findings. |
