Abstract:Background: While much is known about behavior trackers for physical health, trackers aimed at leisure activities and mental health are underexplored. Reading is known to improve mental health, making findings on reading trackers significant amidst rising mental health issues. Aim: This study explores the effects of reading trackers on reading intention and behavior, focusing on four features: social exchange, goal setting, progress tracking, and visualizations/statistics. Method: A qualitative approach was used, with semi-structured interviews of 19 participants who used reading trackers. Participants were selected through purposive and snowball sampling. The interviews explored participants' opinions and use of the four features. Results: The four features showed positive impacts on reading intention through motivation and pressure. However, excessive pressure led to negative effects. Visualizations and statistics increased engagement and enjoyment of the app without necessarily motivating more reading. Conclusion: Overall, reading trackers positively impact reading intention and mental health. Despite occasional negative effects from pressure, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Recommendation: Further research is needed. Reading trackers should focus on qualitative aspects to enhance the reading experience, not just on quantifying behavior. Emphasizing enjoyment and engagement can make these trackers more effective and appealing.
