Abstract: | Background: Research into lucid dreaming (LD) reveals equivocal outcomes, linking it to psychopathological outcomes as well as improved mental health (MH). Aim: The aim of this Systematic Literature Review is to fill the research gap by investigating LD and its different components and its relation to psychopathology and MH and potential moderating variables that might affect this relationship. Methods: PsycINFO, Scopus and PubMed were used as electronic databases. Studies were not older than 10 years and should at least contain 30 participants. The extracted data was synthesised into the following categories: Lucidity Intensity & Lucidity Control, Lucidity Frequency, Lucid Dreaming Training and moderating variables. Results: Results revealed positive associations between LD and facets of MH, like spirituality, resilience and social skills. LDs characterised by high content control and high intensity were related to reductions in depression, nightmare distress and PTSD symptomatology. Amongst others, life satisfaction, dispositional mindfulness and nightmare frequency were identified as moderators. Conclusion: The equivocal role of LD relating to MH and psychopathology is partially explained by dream awareness and more thoroughly explained by dream content control, lucidity intensity and positive emotional valence during an LD. Keywords: lucid dreaming, mental health, dream control, psychopathology, lucidity intensity |
