Abstract: | Information technology (IT) is characterised by continuous and rapid transformations. In the context of large enterprises, numerous IT components, part of an IT landscape, are being used to allow the smooth operation of the business. These can create a complex landscape. Without adequate tools, managing complexity and understanding its impact becomes challenging. Given that complexity is an elusive quality of an IT landscape, comprehending its origins, effective management strategies, and associated costs is essential. Enterprise Architecture (EA) is a discipline which supports the management and comprehension of IT landscape complexity. This research introduces a measurement method to make the complexity of the application landscape (subset of IT landscape) visible whilst understanding its associated costs. A mixed-method literature review illustrated drivers and metrics of IT landscape complexity and IT landscape costs. Indicators for application landscape complexity and their interrelations were examined through a case study. The measurement method was validated by employing experts’ opinions. Additionally, this research emphasises various costs associated with complex application landscapes. As organisations struggle with managing the complexity of their application landscape due to rapid IT growth and increased business-IT interdependence, the proposed method helps in managing application landscape complexity, fostering agility and simplicity in IT landscapes. |
