Abstract:This thesis explores the development of an AI-based tool designed to lower the entry barriers for new players of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a tabletop role-playing game that has experienced consistent growth over more than three decades. This project leverages a Large Language Model to simplify the onboarding process for new players, enabling a more seamless introduction to the game. The tool developed through this thesis assists in narrative and content creation tailored to the specific characteristics and preferences of player groups, facilitating engagement in scenarios that align with their learning objectives. To evaluate the system, we conducted a mixed-methods evaluation involving both qualitative feedback from focus groups and quantitative data analysis to assess the effectiveness of the system. Results indicate that the automated materials might help reduce preparation time and support the initial gaming experience by providing coherent, engaging, and highly customizable content. The system was particularly effective in helping new players create customised characters with ease and in boosting confidence levels among players with low experience. The findings may also have implications for the design of other complex games and educational frameworks, where AI can play a role in reducing entry barriers and enhancing learning processes.
