Abstract:This thesis is focused on the printability of the NiTi-based shape memory alloy with the Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) printing process. Compared to other printing technologies, LMD offers great advantages in terms of high printing speeds for large parts, low porosity, and easiness of use. A significant benefit is that (cheap) welding wires can be installed easily, ensuring a high deposition rate for printing large structures. This makes it a major benefit for the fabrication of shape memory alloys. The objective of this assignment was to optimise the printability of wire-based NiTi by finding an optimal processing window, while assessing the material properties of the printed part. To find the optimal print setting(s), a Design of Experiment (DOE) process was carried out, and different print settings were evaluated based on both printability and material characteristics. The most optimal print has been further analysed by a wide range of microstructural and thermo-mechanical tests.
