Abstract: | Food waste is an ever growing problem which threatens food security, unnecessary environmental impacts, and waste of resources. There are many factors related to food waste behaviors, and these behaviors are heavily affected by social factors. One way that food waste can be reduced is by utilizing food recommender systems (FRS). While some existing FRSs consider sustainable consumption, few integrate food waste reduction. The paper conducts a literature review and designs mock-up FRS wireframes evaluated by university students via a survey to investigate how sustainable FRSs for food waste reduction can be made. The results indicate that features like ingredient logging, portion adjustments, nutritional information, and eco-scores are necessary to promote sustainable choices and reduce food waste. The findings suggest that implementing behavior change components, such as nudging and reminders for expiring food, can notably enhance the effectiveness of FRSs in promoting sustainability and food waste reduction. These insights contribute to developing more effective FRSs that address both nutritional needs and food waste reduction. |
