Abstract: | In 2023, a record 474 thousand young people in the Netherlands accessed youth care services, driven by issues such as psychological, behavioural, and social challenges. Dutch municipalities have been responsible for youth care since 2015, resulting in growing waiting lists and costs. In Rijssen-Holten, school social workers (SSWs) play a crucial role in preventive youth care, facing potential budget cuts and funding changes from the National Programme for Education (NPO). To address these challenges, integrating group therapy into school social work (SSW) was explored. A qualitative study involving school social workers, school care coordinators, and an online survey with 15 youth aged 12-18 from four secondary schools in Rijssen-Holten provided insights. Stakeholders acknowledged benefits such as peer support and improved social skills through group therapy, potentially reducing caseloads and hours. Challenges such as managing group size, group dynamics and individual needs were noted, along with potential organisational complexities in scheduling and accommodating preferences. Overall, stakeholders expressed positive attitudes towards group therapy within SSW, emphasizing the need to consider individual preferences and address organizational hurdles to ensure successful implementation. |
