Abstract: | Radar systems rely on High Power Amplifiers (HPAs) to amplify signals for precise long-range detection, generating substantial heat that requires strict thermal management. Existing research on microchannel cooling designs lacks comprehensive comparisons regarding cooling power, temperature uniformity, compactness, and feasibility. This thesis addresses this gap by focusing on implementing microchannel cooling in radar system cold plates for HPA cooling. An analytical tool was developed to facilitate rapid evaluation of manifold, straight, and serpentine configurations, providing a practical alternative to simulations. The findings show that the Thermal-Hydrodynamic Model (THM) effectively estimates thermal resistance and pressure drop within acceptable error margins compared to numerical simulations. For example, straight channel pressure drop estimates stayed within a 10% error margin, while serpentine channels met this criterion when De ≤ 40. Manifold configurations required IR ≤ 0.13 and VR = 1 at low Reynolds numbers to achieve a 15% error margin. In conclusion, this research presents the developed model as a practical alternative to simulation-based approaches. |
