Abstract: | This research addresses the design of an off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery simulator. OPCAB is a surgical treatment which is used to treat coronary artery disease. Mastering this surgical treatment takes repetition to gain experience. The development of an OPCAB simulator allows surgeons to refine their skills without risking patient safety. Analyses were performed to determine opportunities for functionalities of the OPCAB simulator. Resulting in the primary objective: to develop a prototype OPCAB simulator that functions as a proof of concept, featuring a life-like beating heart and an integrated hemodynamic feedback mechanism. The result of this research is the successful development of a cutting-edge design prototype of a beating heart OPCAB simulator with an included hemodynamic feedback system. The new design was evaluated in several aspects, showing promising results. Recommendations for future work have been identified to further improve the design and to implement customization features to the simulator. |
