Abstract: | Background: The use of online support in treating mental health concerns is increasing. Especially for emerging adults these resources indicate a strong potential as 26% of emerging adults report having mental health problems and this age group shows high engagement in seeking support online. However, there has been a gap in the literature in systematic reviews that assess the overall effectiveness of online support interventions for emerging adults. Objective: This review aimed to explore the effectiveness of online support on mental health outcomes for emerging adults. Method: Relevant studies were searched using Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and PsycINFO. In total, 660 records were screened by title and abstract. After the screening process, 8 articles were included in the current systematic review Results: The studies evaluated a range of mental health problems including depression (n=7), anxiety (n=4), general psychological problems (n=3), schizophrenia (n=1), and substance use (n=1). Studies focusing on depression, anxiety, and psychological distress symptoms show mixed effectiveness, whereas interventions targeting more complex disorders like substance use and schizophrenia were ineffective. Conclusion: Further studies need to concentrate on enhancing user engagement, evaluating the efficacy of multi-component support systems, and performing further research on the effectiveness of online social support. |
