Abstract: | Differentiated instruction (DI) is crucial for successful education, as it involves using diverse teaching methods to tailor material, techniques, and goals based on the unique learning needs of a diverse group of students. While there is substantial research on DI in regular education, special education for students with auditory and/or communicative impairments, have received limited attention. Special education works with an interdisciplinary team of different professionals. The aim of this study is to ascertain the extent to which principles derived from research in primary education are applied in theory and practice in special education. The research employs a qualitative research design, including a systematic review and expert appraisal. While DI principles are valued for their ability to meet diverse learning needs, challenges persist in special education. The five differentiation principles are present to varying degrees in both literature and practice. Professionals highlight the importance of these strategies and call for more emphasis on cognitive differentiation. Effective integration of DI relies on robust interprofessional collaboration. This collaboration is crucial for developing tailored instructional strategies that meet individual student needs. Future research should fill literature gaps and assess the impact of collaborative training initiatives to enhance support for these students. |
