Abstract:The development of AI tools in various fields, including medicine, has accelerated in recent years. In healthcare, AI can influence how professionals work and how patients experience visits. Especially when AI is used as an additional tool in decision-making processes, such as determining treatments or discharge times. It is crucial to recognize the potential for bias in these processes, whether from the healthcare professional or the AI. This focus includes various forms of bias, which can impact both human and AI decision-making. Research indicates that different biases affect decision-making in various ways, often unnoticed by healthcare professionals or software programmers. Case studies on AI in acute medicine, AI as a co-pilot in healthcare, and Clinical Decision Support Systems illustrate the practical applications and future potential of AI tools. These studies highlight the role of bias in human decision-making when AI tools are used to assess patients, emphasizing the need for a foundation and high-quality data to develop robust and useful AI tools. Understanding the impacts of bias, which are context-dependent, is essential. Addressing "What might the impacts of bias in AI and human decision-making within healthcare?" reveals that the impact of bias is diverse and in need of further research.
