Abstract:Schiphol Airport is interested in the effects of measures on the access mode choice of passengers and personnel travelling to Schiphol Airport. A discrete choice model is estimated to explain access mode choice, based on commonly used explanatory variables like travel time and costs. Besides a good fit, the estimated models were able to provide a modal share closely resembling the observations in a validation dataset. That does not only hold for the total modal share but also for more specific segments, based on for example residence and trip purpose. Moreover, values of time savings, i.e. how much euro people are willing to pay to reduce their travel time by one hour, were of the same magnitude as observed in KiM (2023), indicating that the models explain access mode choice to a large extent. Using this knowledge, the models are applied to the passenger and personnel population, obtaining current modal shares. Moreover, the models are applied to three future scenarios to assess a modal shift. Integrating access mode choice models within the Schiphol Travel Demand model of Goudappel is recommended for a better understanding of the effects of a mode shift on the underlying road network around Schiphol Airport.
