Abstract: | Today, we face a world that is more digital than ever before, impacting society as a whole and, in particular, the playground of businesses and customers. Companies face the challenge of capitalizing on the opportunities in the digital age, which may require changes in how they should conduct business. The notion of a Digital Business Strategy (DBS) can facilitate this digital journey. However, there is still a significant lack of consistent conceptualization in the academic literature. Moreover, there is only little empirical evidence for how a DBS is understood and developed in practice. Nevertheless, researchers use a variety of measurement constructs without sufficient justification, for instance, to test correlations of DBS within nomological networks. The goal of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of DBS. A congruence analysis is employed as the chosen methodology consisting of two steps. First, a structured literature review is conducted to make sense of the academic discussion and shed light to the inconsistencies prevalent. An analytical framework is proposed to guide future research to explicate their understanding of a DBS. Second, case studies of two medium-sized companies are analyzed and discussed in the light of the academic discourse, thereby confronting different theoretical propositions and adding empirical substance to the academic debate on DBS. |
