Abstract:Climate change poses a significant threat, particularly for younger generations who must address its long-term consequences. To equip young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to combat climate change, climate change education has been introduced. Additionally, a focus on collaborative work in school settings is emphasized. To support this, the AI chatbot Clair was developed to mediate group discussions, enhancing both the quality of discussions and the final product. This group work was designed using the inquiry-based learning approach within the Twente Go-Lab online learning environment. The study aimed to explore the effectiveness of the AI chatbot Clair on collaborative work within this inquiry-based learning environment focused on climate change. An intervention lesson was conducted at a German high school, accompanied by pre- and post-tests to measure the outcomes. Data analysis revealed that overall scores for the used scales did not yield significant results. However, certain individual items showed a significant effect of Clair's mediation. Although the study did not fully confirm its hypotheses, valuable insights were gained from the questions that demonstrated significant effects. The study also provided implications for future research on the topic, suggesting directions for further investigation to better understand the potential of AI chatbots in educational settings.
