Abstract: | Urban parks enhance urban life by providing recreational spaces, promoting social interaction, and supporting environmental sustainability. Designing these parks is complex due to the diverse needs of stakeholders. This thesis explores using Procedural Content Generation (PCG) techniques, particularly the Wave Function Collapse (WFC) algorithm, to innovate the urban park design process. The study includes a literature review on urban park purposes and design principles, and examines various PCG methods, ultimately selecting the WFC algorithm for its ability to generate diverse and coherent spatial patterns from input constraints. The primary goal is to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of WFC in urban park design. An interview with a landscape architect reveals key design values such as accessibility, biodiversity, and aesthetic appeal, which guide the development of design requirements and the implementation of the WFC algorithm. The methodology explains tile-based modeling, overlapping tiles, and tile rotation, with the implementation process involving custom tile creation and design experimentation. Results show that the WFC algorithm can generate functional and visually appealing park designs. Expert user tests and surveys highlight the approach’s potential, though further refinement is needed. The thesis concludes that integrating PCG techniques like WFC into urban park design is promising, contributing to computational urban design and innovative park planning. |
