Abstract: | An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a vascular anomaly where an abnormal connection exists between an artery and a vein. This study evaluates the impact of coiled embolization on blood flow within an AVM. A custom-made coil and a 3D-printed AVM model were used to simulate this process. Blood flow dynamics were analyzed using 4D flow MRI measurements on a tabletop MRI. Findings indicate that coiled embolization with a handmade coil and catheter in an AVM phantom disrupts direct flow through the AVM. This disruption was shown by an increased spread of vector lengths in the flow direction and heightened curl within the coil and aneurysmal zone of the AVM, visible in the flow profile. Future applications of 4D flow MRI could provide additional data for validating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. Including a simplified capillary network around the AVM could offer insights into the increased resistance of a coiled AVM and its effect on capillary blood flow. Maintaining stationary AVM conditions, without rotation between measurements, would further improve model accuracy. This research represents a step toward creating complete AVM CFD models that could enhance and optimize embolization interventions. |
