Abstract:The study explores the increasing energy consumption and environmental challenges, with the construction sector being a significant contributor. Green retrofitting (GR) is identified as a key solution to improve the energy efficiency of residential buildings. Focusing on the Netherlands, particularly Utrecht, the research aims to understand the key drivers and barriers influencing the adoption of GR practices among Dutch residents. Through policy analysis and interviews with local residents, the study finds that financial incentives and environmental benefits are the primary motivators for GR adoption. However, despite various subsidies and loans, challenges in implementation remain. The study concludes with recommendations to enhance adoption rates, emphasizing the need for local authorities' intervention and applying the principles of the Diffusion of Innovations Theory.
