Abstract:In recent years, TikTok has surged in popularity among young adults and university students. However, research suggests that prolonged TikTok usage may negatively impact academic performance, increasing stress and procrastination. Despite the growing use of TikTok, studies exploring these effects remain limited, hindering the development of effective interventions. This study aims to address this gap by examining the relationship between TikTok usage, academic stress, and procrastination among university students. Using a cross-sectional online survey, data were collected from 38 students, utilizing the Problematic TikTok Use Scale (PTTS), the Academic Procrastination Scale (APS), and the Lakaey Academic Stress Response Scale (ASS). The findings indicate that TikTok use is positively correlated with academic procrastination (r = .33) and stress (r = .58), with a strong link between procrastination and stress (r = .72). Additionally, TikTok usage significantly predicts higher academic stress levels (β = .55, p < .001), accounting for 33% of its variance (R2 = .33). However, procrastination did not mediate the relationship between TikTok usage and stress (Prop.Mediated = .31, p = .09). Despite its limitations, this study adds to the literature on social media's impact on academic outcomes, highlighting areas for future research and intervention development.
