Abstract:Background: This study investigates generational differences in media repertoires within the framework of mediatisation and mutual learning. The literature review highlights significant distinctions in media use among Generation Z, Millennials, and Baby Boomers, and identifies a research gap, underscoring the need for cross-generational learning. The research aims to explore how these generations interact with various media and what they can learn from each other’s practices. Research Design: Using a qualitative approach, the study employs semi-structured screen time interviews to gather in-depth insights from 18 participants, divided equally among the three generations. Ethical considerations, such as obtaining approval, pseudonymising names, and securely storing data, were strictly followed. Findings: A phenomenological analysis of the data identified distinct media repertoires: Generation Z gravitates towards high-stimulation digital media but also enjoys long-form content as a secondary activity; Millennials balance efficiency with entertainment; Baby Boomers prefer traditional media and single-task activities that foster mindfulness. These findings enhance understanding of generational media use and highlight opportunities for cross-generational learning. In conclusion, the study offers valuable insights into intergenerational media practices, emphasizing the potential for mutual learning. Addressing the study's limitations and exploring future research directions will further promote harmonious media engagement across generations.
