Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to gain insight into what patient characteristics influence the perception of the HCP to what extent a patient is capable of participating in SDM and to assess the level of agreement about the preferred type of support for HCPs in SDM. Methods: A vignette study with patient profiles was conducted to capture HCPs’ perceptions of the patients’ capabilities to participate in SDM and the type of support desired by HCPs. Surveys containing twelve vignettes were developed and distributed among HCPs consulting with COPD patients. A multiple linear regression model was developed to identify significant features influencing the perception of HCPs. Inter-rater agreement analyses were conducted to determine the agreement of the perception and preferred support type among the HCPs. Results: Significant patient characteristics influencing HCP perceptions included educational level, knowledge about the condition, comorbidities, attitude towards treatment, and perceived general health status. Additionally, there was little agreement among HCPs regarding perceptions and preferred types of support for SDM. Conclusion: This study was one of the first that identified significant patient characteristics reported by HCPs that influence the perception of an HCP about SDM. Moreover, the perceptions and preferred support types for SDM varied largely among HCPs.
