Abstract:The thesis explores how technological advancements impact the psychological contract (PC) between leaders and followers, focusing on the leader's perspective. The PC refers to the unspoken, informal agreements that shape expectations and obligations within the leader-follower relationship. The study acknowledges that traditional PCs are being challenged by changes brought about by the fourth industrial revolution. These technologies can complicate leadership roles, blur responsibilities, and potentially reduce trust due to decreased face-to-face interactions. Through qualitative research involving interviews with leaders in a high-tech organization, the study reveals that while technology complicates trust-building, it can also enhance transparency by providing more information about leadership practices. The findings suggest that technology does not significantly alter the core elements of the PC or the dynamic processes like creation, renegotiation, and repair, which remain reliant on personal interactions. Leaders must focus on maintaining trust, transparency, and reciprocity in digital contexts, emphasising ethical technology use and clear communication. The research provides insights into leadership strategies that uphold the PC amid increasing technological integration, offering guidance for navigating the evolving workplace landscape.
