Abstract:The coordination center of the fire department in Lübeck, Germany, is next to the task of a fire department also responsible for non-emergency patient transports. They are dealing with short notice for a large number of the transport requests. This does not allow for efficient route planning and therefore results in long waiting times for patients. To be able to handle this better, this research looks at the impact of different scheduling strategies on the transportation system. In order to do so, the framework of DARP routing models and heuristics are used to test the scheduling strategies. Each strategy got tested on three data sets. Each data set represents one month of transports. Based on the research, the fire department should schedule transports every 30 minutes instead of directly after a transport request has been received.
