Abstract:This thesis explores the relationship between Scope 3 activities, referring to the direct greenhouse gas emissions within an organization value chain, during renovation projects, and the subsequent reduction in emissions during the operational phase of a building’s lifecycle, leading to a payback period on CO₂e emissions, in the context of the Dutch building sector. The study provides a comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of renovation projects and develops a practical tool to calculate the total CO₂e emissions for Scope 3 in renovation projects. By conducting a literature review and an empirical study, the research addresses the gaps in the existing knowledge and provides insights into the relationship between Scope 3 project emissions and the performance on the operational phase of the building’s lifecycle, pre- and post-renovation in the Dutch building sector.
