Abstract:AI currently helps us with our IQ, but can it also help us with our EQ? How might we be able to use it effectively for moral enhancement-- especially in relation to early education students, who are going to grow up with this technology as part of their daily interactions? Focusing on early education students, this thesis explores how AI and social robots can enhance moral education. Using the Value Sensitive Design (VSD) approach, it emphasizes the goal of fostering technomoral resilience—preparing students to navigate a world shaped by evolving technology. The research conceptually examines early and moral education, technically assesses current AI implementations, and applies empirical investigations using the VSD approach to address ethical concerns and stakeholder values. It highlights gaps in moral education, particularly the lack of focus on technomoral resilience, and proposes AI-based solutions as a unique opportunity for an educational tool to aid in this endeavor. This research culminates in the proposed 'MiruBots' project, combining key elements from the VSD investigations to create a practical tool for teaching morality. Ultimately, it advocates for a responsibly designed social robot learning companion which aims to integrate moral reflection into education and encourage responsible citizenship in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
