Abstract: | A qualitative study into the challenges of finding financing for SMEs in the Netherlands, looking at the collaboration between banks and non-bank financiers. Traditional financing is increasingly rejected by companies, while alternative sources of financing are emerging. There is little collaboration between them, with trust being central to this study in combination with regulations and information sharing. Semi-structured interviews with banks and non-bank financiers are used to examine the current state of collaboration, the factors that influence trust, regulations and information sharing. This is tested with SME entrepreneurs. This shows that there is currently limited, inconsistent collaboration. Factors that lead to limited trust include the recognition of non-bank financiers and different financing options. Regulations are stricter for banks, which allows non-bank financiers to provide more flexible and faster financing. Sharing information quickly and transparently appears to be difficult due to the limited privacy options and permission from the customer. Mutual trust has a lot of impact and differs a lot between banks and the various non-bank financiers and is determined by creditbility (knowledge), reliability (keeping agreements), intimacy (openness) and self-orientation (self-interest). Recommendations are to implement the covenant, draw up more initiatives, invest in data security and exaggerate good behavior. |
