Abstract: | The goal of this thesis was to develop and optimize an in-house workflow for the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NCI) for designing zygomatic implant surgical guides for maxillectomy patients. This thesis outlines the steps of the developed workflow. The first step involves a method to register Cone Beam Computed Tomography scans and intra-oral scans to create a 3-Dimensional (3D) model of the patient. Using this 3D model, a virtual surgical planning can be made containing the implant positions. To enhance efficiency, an algorithm was developed to semi-automatically determine initial implant positions, which can be finalized during multidisciplinary consultations. Once the implant positions are confirmed, a surgical guide can be designed according to a developed protocol. This design protocol was tested in a phantom study. Furthermore, the design protocol was compared to the design methods from Erasmus Medical Centre and University Medical Centre Utrecht to identify key design parameters. The comparative analysis lays the groundwork for a collaborative discussion between the Dutch centres, aiming to provide new insights and share the methodologies of guide design. Altogether, this thesis lays the foundation for an in-house workflow for guided zygomatic implant placements, which can be implemented for future patients in the NCI. |
