Abstract: | Background: This secondary analysis is based on the study by Lamers et al. (2015), and partly examined the same longitudinal bidirectional relationship between PMH and psychopathology. This study differs because it used traditional statistical models but extends the original study by examining gender as moderator. Methods: Data from the LISS panel were used. PMH was measured with the MHC-SF and psychopathology with the BSI. Two hierarchical regression models were used to examine the relationship between PMH and psychopathology, using both the baseline, as well as changes over time. It was examined which change was the better predictor, and whether gender moderated the relationships between the changes in the predictors and the dependent variables. Results: Psychopathology at T2 and the changes within psychopathology significantly predicted PMH at T3, however, effect sizes were small. A similar pattern was observed for PMH as predictor of psychopathology. Gender was not a significant moderator. The changes in both predictors wielded similar effects. Conclusion: The relationships found were negligible, contradicting Lamers et al. (2015). Study duration, chosen statistical model and available data may have influenced the results. Future research should consider these critically and should consider advanced methods like Latent Growth Modelling with an IRT model. |
