Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the grieving process by limiting traditional support systems, which increased the risk of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). An internet-based intervention (IBI) was developed to address these challenges, though high dropout rates were observed. This study investigates the motivations for completing the IBI and explores whether goal-setting theory can explain adherence. As part of the Grief Covid project, this qualitative study involved virtual interviews with 14 participants. Thematic analysis, using both deductive and inductive coding, was applied to understand participants' experiences, with different interview scripts used for those who completed or dropped out of the intervention. Two key themes emerged: motivations for completing the intervention and the role of goal setting. Motivational factors included the intervention’s flexible structure, emotional relief, feeling understood, and curiosity about new topics. Participants’ goals were to receive psychological care and emotional support to cope with their grief. The study revealed that these elements, combined with the goal-setting process, played a role in sustaining engagement with the intervention. These findings lay the groundwork for future research to enhance the effectiveness of internet-based grief interventions by tailoring them to specific groups and incorporating achievable, personalized goals.
