Abstract:This study examines the use of gamification and storytelling in digital learning environments for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), aiming to enhance engagement and knowledge acquisition. The research focused on whether incorporating game elements, with or without storytelling, would significantly impact learners' outcomes compared to a traditional control group. A between-subjects design was employed with three groups: a control group, a gamification-only group, and a gamification with storytelling group. Forty-two participants completed sustainable development tasks in a digital setting, with engagement self-reported post-activity and knowledge measured before and after. The interactive tasks were custom-designed, and elements varied by group condition. Data analysis included contrast analysis, ANOVA, and ANCOVA, revealing no statistically significant differences in engagement or knowledge gains across groups. Despite the lack of significant findings, results underscored the influence of prior knowledge on learning outcomes, suggesting the importance of adaptive scaffolding in digital learning environments. These findings offer insights into tailoring ESD approaches to diverse learner needs.
