Abstract: | In the Netherlands, climate change has increased flood risk due to rising sea levels, more intense river floods, and heavy rainfall. Traditional flood prevention, like dike reinforcement, is effective but costly, spatially restrictive, and does not enhance spatial quality. Consequently, a shift to diversified flood risk management, including consequence mitigation, is required. This research aims to evaluate and formulate recommendations for improving the process and output of two Dutch spatial flood risk management approaches with regard to flood resilience. Two case studies are examined: the depoldering of the Noordwaard and the flood-resilient landscapes project in Zwolle. Through the evaluation of process and output in both projects it becomes is found that both approaches contribute to flood resilience. Recommendations include prioritising knowledge sharing to prepare for future challenges, promoting participatory processes to reduce resistance and incorporate local knowledge, and fostering cross-sectoral collaboration for integral flood safety measures. These measures can improve flood risk management strategies for future projects in the Netherlands to enhance flood resilience. |
