Abstract: | This study assesses the comparability of non-invasive arterial blood pressure measurements, obtained via the volume clamp method, with invasive measurements, obtained via an arterial cannula in the radial artery in thirty-one patients recovering from cardiac surgery. This study also examined the effect of noradrenaline of the accuracy of the volume clamp method. Comparisons were made in the time-domain, finding an underestimation of the blood pressure, obtained from the volume clamp method, in 67.5% of the patients, with a lower rate of underestimation (59%) among noradrenaline-administered patients versus 71% in those without. Oscillations were compared by cross-spectral density, average power across frequency bands and via an wavelet transfer function. Correlations were high for frequencies associated with the heart rate. However, for low-frequencies such as the ones related to the respiratory system, correlations were lower. This is likely due to these frequencies differing per patients. Frequencies associated with Mayer waves had extremely low correlation. The power analysis revealed that invasive measurements recoded higher power, particularly at high-frequencies. Minimal differences in the frequency-domain were observed between patients who were administered noradrenaline and patients who were not. The wavelet transfer function indicated limited accuracy of the volume clamp method for frequencies below 0.3 Hz. |
