Abstract: | Chronic musculoskeletal pain patients suffer from persistent pain in the locomotor system which is suggested to be alleviated using self-management tools like Virtual Reality (VR). To present an overview of the current evidence of the effectiveness, usability and user satisfaction of VR for chronic musculoskeletal pain and identify future research gaps, this scoping review was conducted. The search was conducted in four databases and the hits were screened in Covidence. Afterwards a quality assessment was performed. Fifteen articles were included, of which most, namely eleven, were conducted among chronic lower back pain patients. The included articles suggested that psychotherapy-based VR effectively reduced pain intensity in most of the studies, whereas embodiment-based and exercise-based VR showed ineffectiveness in all but one article. VR was usable according to chronic musculoskeletal pain patients, however, there were mixed reviews regarding satisfaction with the technology. Psychotherapy-based VR programs were more often rated as satisfactory than the other categories. The quality of seven out of twelve articles was scored as acceptable. This scoping review shows that VR is promising new treatment option for chronic musculoskeletal pain. However, due to the narrow scope of the articles, more diverse studies are recommended to confirm the effectiveness of VR. |
