Abstract: | Little research has been done on effects of risk communication, given as behavioural training, on promoting self-reliant behaviour in children. One of the few studies on this topic shows that risk communication, as behavioural training, is still effective after three months in the eldest children of primary school. The question is whether this effect also persists in later life. This quantitative study examined the effect of an active risk message, given to the eldest children of primary school, on the level of intention for self-reliant behaviour after three years for three safety topics. It also examined the effect on the variables risk perception, response efficacy, self-efficacy and social norm. The study shows that after three years, an active risk message still leads to higher levels of response efficacy, self-efficacy and social norm. Also, after three years, an active risk message leads to an increased intention of self-reliant behaviour. The effect of the active risk message could be fully explained by the variables response efficacy, self-efficacy and social norm for the safety theme. It is expected that the results of this study can be generalised to multiple target groups and education programmes with behavioural training for different themes. |
