Abstract:This study explores the predictors of digital informal learning among university students, as it provides plenty of academic benefits that students and universities could enjoy. However, digital informal learning has not received commensurate attention from educational scientist and designers over the last decades. To find out how digital informal learning can be encouraged among students and universities, it’s imperative to know which factors predict the use of digital platforms for informal learning. However, as only one piece of literature is found that investigates these predictors, there appears to be a gap in research investigating this. Therefore, this gap is addressed in the current study, investigating: what are the predictors of digital informal learning among university students? A literature review revealed that the constructs: “attitude”, “performance expectancy”, “effort expectancy “and “social influences “of the UTAUT model are predictors of “behavioral intention” towards digital informal learning. In turn behavioral intention and “facilitating conditions” are expected to predict the “use behavior” if digital platforms for informal learning. To investigate this, all the afore mentioned constructs are investigated trough a cross-sectional study, among a population of 167 students. Surveys are created, based on studies that apply the UTAUT model for digital learning. Results suggest that attitude, performance expectancy, effort expectancy and social influences are predictors of behavioral intention towards digital informal learning. In turn behavioral intention and facilitating conditions seem to predict use behavior of digital platforms for informal learning. This gives universities insight into which factors can predict the use of digital platforms for informal learning among students. To understand which platforms are preferred by students their use behavior, regarding various digital platforms is also investigated. It is found that YouTube, Chat GPT and “Movies and Series”, are the most popular platforms and formats for digital informal learning amongst our study population. These platforms might therefore be the most interesting candidates to facilitate digital informal learning among university students.
