Optimising Core Process Technology System Delivery in Global Capacity Expansions: Identifying and Mitigating Critical Success Factors and Risks.

Sprokkereef, Annemie H. (2025)

Uranium Enrichment Company (Urenco) aims to increase its capacity to meet growing demand. The availability of Core Process Technology (CPT) is critical to this goal. Urenco faces challenges in mitigating supply chain-related risks to ensure the timely delivery and installation of CPT systems globally. The main research question is: "How can Urenco manage supply chain-related risks to ensure the timely delivery and installation of CPT systems in global capacity expansions?" Using the DMAIC methodology (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control), the problem is analysed. Data is collected through interviews and Urenco’s intranet, involving six key stakeholders. Techniques such as Process Flow Diagrams, Gantt charts, and Reverse Risk Analysis are used. A process model is established to understand CPT system delivery and prepare for future phases. Twelve Critical Success Factors (CSFs) are identified and grouped into four clusters. These CSFs are translated into risks, with stakeholder misalignment being the most critical. The proposed solution involves regular cross-functional handover meetings to ensure alignment. This reduces the risk of misalignment and provides financial benefits. The solution lowers the total risk score and increases the likelihood of meeting the project deadline, supporting Urenco’s capacity goals by 2032.
