Abstract:Hope appears essential in today’s world since it fosters resilience, motivation and the possibility of positive change, and is therefore broadly investigated. Theological research examines answers to uncertainties of life that are searched in deities. Psychological research explores one’s mind, behaviour, and experiences. This scoping review examines the research question ‘What are the commonalities and differences in the research on hope in psychology and theology?’. Sub-questions focus on the definitions, sources and effects of hope. A literature search was conducted in three databases (Web of Science, PsycINFO and Philosopher’s Index) with keywords covering hope, sources, effects, and the disciplines. Inclusion criteria were (a) hope is a main element; (b) covers the psychological or theological field; (c) mentions both sources and consequences; (d) article is peer-reviewed; (e) English or Dutch; and (f) the full text is accessible. Results included six articles, analysed thematically using modes of hoping (Webb, 2007) and distinguishing internal and external factors (Pleeging et al., 2022). Results in both disciplines explain hope as a cognitive process and a virtue. Additionally, one psychological study defined hope as a state of mind and all three theological studies emphasised the essence of religion. Psychological studies included resolute and patient hope, theological studies included utopian and patient hope. Both disciplines considered internal and external sources, focusing on internal in psychology and external in theology. Both disciplines included internal effects that were more practical in psychology and spiritual in theology. In conclusion, the disciplines complement and reinforce each other, and strengthen individuals in uncertain times. By applying hope, one can be transposed towards something not yet realised, for which practical insights can help. While much research was available, this review was limited by its scope, narrowing the search query. A meta-analysis could conduct more inclusive research, providing an improved overview of hope.
