Abstract:Stress can have a serious impact on societies since citizens are at risk to suffer short- and long-term consequences of stress. Repeatedly, stress was associated with cognitive performance in the scientific field. But a gap between controlled setting and naturalistic settings might influence research findings regarding stress and cognition. Thus, this study explores an association between stress and cognition, considering the potential moderating role of sleep quality in daily life. Two research questions were proposed. The first focused on the association between daily stress and cognitive performance, while the second research question took a potential moderation by sleep quality into account. Data was collected from nine participants using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) over two weeks. A simple regression showed that stress is not significantly associated with cognition (b = 0.90, t(6) = 2.18, p = .072). Similarly, sleep quality did not significantly moderate this relationship (p = .100). However, the positive coefficient indicates a potential trend. These findings suggest no significant association between stress, cognition, and sleep quality in daily life, highlighting the need for further research with larger, more diverse samples and refined methodologies. Keywords: Stress, cognition, sleep quality, ecological momentary assessment, daily life
