Abstract: | Humanity faces an array of unprecedented and highly complex challenges threatening our existence and societies, demanding for new approaches and action for the future. To do this, it is essential that people are aware of how we anticipate and act on ideas and problems of the future. One of the theories focused on this is Futures Consciousness (FC); however, not all underlying influences that could help increase FC are known. That is why this study aims to analyse the relationship between Self-Reflection (SR), dimensions of FC and the constructs of Critical Thinking (CT) and General Self-Efficacy (GSE). This study was performed using a one-time data collection in the form of a questionnaire on a sample of primarily Dutch female students, with a variance in age (N= 106). The Futures Consciousness Scale, the Self-Reflection and Insight Scale-Revised, the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale and the New General Self-Efficacy Scale were used in the questionnaire. Results showed that there was no relationship between SR and Agency Beliefs and Openness to Alternatives through CT or GSE. It showed a possible mediating relationship between SR, FC, and CT; further research with more generalisable samples is needed. More research is required into a potential relationship between the dimension Time Perspective and SR. |
