Abstract: | This paper researches the effectiveness of the application "MindFlourish" on mindfulness. It first researches user-engaging gamification aspects and their effect on mindfulness, concluding to incorporate the following aspects into "MindFlourish"; goals, story, virtual goods, customization, mini-games, and rewards. It describes the design and evaluation of the gamified mindfulness application "MindFlourish" which uses nontraditional meditation techniques, such as breathwork, journaling, gratitude, emotion exploration, and using senses to ground yourself, to invoke a sense of mindfulness. User studies have been performed, with the FFMQ-15 before and after interacting with the application and interviews to evaluate the impact of the application. Results show a significant increase in mindfulness after interacting with the application, proving it to be a promising start for future work. In the interview, some suggestions on the application are given which provide a start for future work to go off of. The user study is limited to one session with the application. |
