Abstract:The Experience Sampling Method (ESM) is widely used in research for real-time data collection, enhancing ecological validity. However, clear guidelines on response scale design, particularly labelling options, are lacking. Prior studies suggest that response labelling can influence study outcomes, but its effect on user experience (UX) and compliance in ESM studies remains unexplored. This study investigates the impact of full versus endpoint labelling using a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Participants completed ESM questionnaires via the Ethica app, reporting emotional states 10 times daily for seven days. They were randomly assigned to a full labelled 7-point Likert scale or only endpoint labelled 7-point Likert scale. Compliance was measured by questionnaire completion rate, while UX was assessed via a post-study survey. The endpoint condition included an additional question on midpoint interpretation. Results showed no significant differences in compliance or UX between conditions. However, variations in interpreting the midpoint were observed in the endpoint labelling group. The findings suggest that labelling type does not affect compliance or UX but highlight the importance of clear response options and strategies to improve participant engagement in ESM studies.
